About us

Founded in the field, built for the long run.

OTHERwise Research was founded in October 2024 as a new chapter in our team’s long-standing journey of rigorous, field-rooted research in some of the world’s most complex contexts.

Our history

Roots & reset.

2011

Our roots — Forcier Consulting

Our roots trace back to the founding of Forcier Consulting in South Sudan — a humanitarian research consultancy delivering robust insight from the toughest contexts. Over thirteen years, a team of 40+ professionals conducted over 800 research projects across 49 countries, pioneering methods such as smartphone-based data collection in fragile and conflict-affected areas.

2024

Our reset

Following the structured dissolution of Forcier, our research and operations teams came together to reimagine, not replicate, our past work. Through a participatory transition we shaped a new identity rooted in the same values: equity, curiosity, and rigor. The result is OTHERwise Research — a female-led, employee-owned, values-driven enterprise built from the ground up. The name changed; the people, principles, and purpose remain, with sharper focus.

Today

Our vision forward

We’re not chasing scale for its own sake. Our future lies in deepening the kind of work that matters — research that listens, builds trust, and drives meaningful change in the places where it’s needed most. As we expand into new contexts and collaborations, we carry forward a shared commitment to rigor, humility, and solidarity — building a future where research is not extractive, but transformative.

Meet the team

Practitioners and thinkers.

We’re a team of practitioners and thinkers who bring hands-on experience and solid academic grounding to every project — whether in complex field environments or policy spaces.

Our approach

Building knowledge systems that endure — and the people to lead them.

We see research as a tool for real change: rooted in lived experience and designed to challenge assumptions. By connecting learning with action, and data with strategy, we help partners make sense of complexity and move forward with confidence in uncertain environments.

01

Independent, ethical infrastructure

In contexts where data is sensitive or politicized, we take no shortcuts. Encrypted mobile tools, secure backups, and private EU-hosted servers protect every step — no third-party dependencies.

EU-hosted servers · Company-owned tablets · Zero third-party bottlenecks

02

Investing in our people

We don’t believe in fly-in consultants — we build our people instead, through embedded mentorship, long-term contracts, and hands-on training that outlasts any single project.

1,000+ trained researchers · Long-term partnerships · Hands-on mentorship

03

Leading from the field

Our teams are embedded where the work happens — flood-hit wetlands, displacement camps, remote border towns. This proximity means better questions, and data collected with cultural sensitivity.

Not outsourced. Not fly-in. Built, person by person.

Giving back with purpose

As a social enterprise, we don’t treat impact as a by-product. A portion of our profits is reinvested in initiatives that align with the communities and themes we research — from grassroots education efforts to localized data literacy training. We believe those closest to the issues deserve more than just a voice — they deserve a return.
